Schumann: Symphony No. 4
October 17, 1995, 416th Regular Concert, Suntory Hall
Brahms: Symphony No. 1
October 23, 1995, 417th Regular Concert, Tokyo Bunka Kaikan
Peter Mark and the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra demonstrated an exquisite combination. This was their fourth release from Tobu Recordings, and they have continued to receive positive reviews, with their Bruckner 5 and "New World" Symphony receiving the Recording Arts Special Selection and their Schumann receiving the Semi-Special Selection. Finally, the Fourth Symphony, a Schumann symphony that seems perfectly suited to Mark, is here. This is a truly outstanding performance, beautifully capturing the melancholy and nervous turmoil of a heartfelt heart. The Brahms piece begins with a poignant opening reminiscent of Furtwängler, but then develops into Mark's signature lyrical clarity. A unique and outstanding performance that relentlessly pursues the commonalities with Schumann. Sadly, these concerts were his final visit to Japan. The Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra's wind instruments are truly virtuoso, proving that they were already in good form at the time. Excellent digital recording. Sound Mastering: WEITBLICK
