In 1966, during the rising British rock scene, salesman Ivor Arbiter recognized the need for fuzz effects and decided to publicly share his perspective on this popular sound through his company, Arbiter Electronics, by collaborating with other guitar product companies in London. He was inspired by the round base of a microphone stand and came up with the idea of housing the effect in a similar round enclosure that resembled a face (with two knobs as eyes, a footswitch as a nose, and a brand label as a mouth).

This led to the creation of the Fuzz Face. Later that year, American guitarist Jimi Hendrix visited London, and the Fuzz Face designed by Ivor became his signature effect. The story from that point on is well known.

Initially, the Fuzz Face was manufactured using germanium transistors, but after 1969, when silicon transistors replaced germanium entirely, Arbiter also switched to silicon devices. Jimi Hendrix preferred the silicon version for its stable operation and the aggressive attack and sound quality, as opposed to the less stable germanium units.

The JHS Pedals Smiley faithfully reproduces the excellent sound of the early silicon Fuzz Face. By analyzing vintage units from Josh Scott’s collection, we captured the magic of that era perfectly.

Smiley offers a clear and bright tone, surpassing the boundaries of a typical distortion pedal and blazing sustain, with the intense sustain, extended low end, and biting midrange characteristic of vintage Arbiter units.

One of the most revered features of the classic Fuzz Face is its ability to produce a clean sound by lowering the guitar’s volume knob, and Smiley reproduces this feature as well.
