World-renowned filmmaker Satoshi Kon
His final storyboard collection is finally set to be published this summer!
2023 marks 13 years since the passing of director Satoshi Kon.
Fukkan.com has so far published storyboard collections for all of Director Kon's theatrical films, including 'PERFECT BLUE', 'Millennium Actress', 'Tokyo Godfathers', and 'Paprika'.
There are now two works for which storyboard collections have not yet been published: his only television series, 'Paranoia Agent', and his final short film, 'Ohayou'.
The collection containing the storyboards for both of these works, created by Director Kon, is titled 'Satoshi Kon Storyboard Collection: Paranoia Agent/Ohayou', and with its publication, the "Storyboard Collection" series for Director Kon will be complete.
"Paranoia Agent" is a 13-episode, 30-minute television anime series that aired on WOWOW in 2004. It was both created and directed by Satoshi Kon.
Is it an urban legend, or a real crime? A young boy on roller skates, known as Metal Bat, becomes a victim! Tsukiko Sagi, the designer of the hugely popular mascot character "Maromi," also falls victim. Mysterious figures appear before the two detectives investigating the case, and inexplicable events continue. What starts as a simple juvenile crime gradually reveals an abnormal situation that shakes the very foundations of "reality"…
Despite its episodic format, the gradually transforming narrative creates a unique and distinctive style for a television anime. As a result, it's a masterpiece that fully embodies Satoshi Kon's artistic vision, rivaling even his theatrical films.
Director Kon, in his role as general director, personally handled the storyboards for several parts of the 13 episodes: Episode 1, "The Boy Bat Appears," Episode 2, "The Golden Shoes" (under a different name), and Episode 9, "ETC" (this episode is an anthology format consisting of short dramas). The final episode, Episode 13, is literally the "final episode."
This storyboard collection will include these four episodes.
Also included is "Ohayou," a short film produced as part of "Ani*Kuri 15," which aired on NHK from 2007 to 2008. It is Director Kon's last completed work before his death.
This program was an ambitious project in which 15 creators, including Director Kon, Mamoru Oshii, Makoto Shinkai, Shoji Kawamori, and Mahiro Maeda, created short animated films under the condition of "one minute broadcast time, free theme and content."
What Director Kon has depicted here is the morning routine of a woman living alone, getting ready for work. This character shares the same name, "Mima," as the protagonist of "PERFECT BLUE," making this a kind of spin-off.
This project is Director Kon's final collection of storyboards.
Please enjoy the meticulous collection of his directorial intentions.
