The tea plantations of Uji were opened in the early 13th century by Myōe Kōben, a monk of Toganoo Kōzan-ji Temple (present-day Ukyo-ku, Kyoto City). Its history has been supported by favorable natural conditions, the passion of tea masters, and the patronage of the shogunate. The Kamibayashi family prospered as influential "Ocha-shi" (imperial tea masters) under the generous patronage of the shogunate from the late 14th century, when Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the third shogun, opened tea plantations known as the Seven Famous Gardens of Uji and spread the fame of Uji tea throughout the land. However, in the late 16th century, the Muromachi shogunate fell in battle with Oda Nobunaga. The Uji tea industry, which had deep ties to the shogunate, also suffered great damage. Afterwards, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who loved tea and spread the tea ceremony to the people, devoted himself to the reconstruction of Uji, and the Uji tea industry entered a new era. To meet the expectations of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the first generation Kamibayashi Shunshoken continued to work hard and established his residence in Nishicho, Uji Bridge (present-day Uji Kamibayashi Memorial Hall). During the Tokugawa era, the tea ceremony flourished even more, and Shogun Ieyasu appointed the Kamibayashi family as Uji magistrates and tea chiefs. The Kamibayashi family eventually came to be entrusted with the overall control of Uji tea. From the "Kamibayashi Shunsho Main Store" website - A 7-piece matcha set, all made in Japan.
