Koi were first kept for ornamental purposes in Japan in the 1820s. The term "Koi" originates from Japanese and originally referred to freshwater fish known as "carp" in general. However, the variety referred to as "Koi" in English is officially called "Nishikigoi," named for its beautiful patterns resembling brocade. Additionally, "koi" is a homophone in Japanese that means "love" or "affection," leading to koi being a symbol of "love," "friendship," and "connection" in Japanese culture. Furthermore, koi are associated with the Chinese legend of "Tōryūmon," which tells of koi swimming upstream to become dragons, symbolizing effort, success, and advancement. Due to their strong ability to overcome adversity, koi are also incorporated into customs such as koi nobori, symbolizing the healthy growth of children and the realization of dreams.
