Product Introduction
The "Kenko Variable NDX II" is a variable ND filter that allows you to adjust the light reduction by rotating the front frame.
It can be smoothly adjusted from ND2.5 to ND450, eliminating the need to carry multiple filters. It is an essential filter for video shooting with digital cameras to prevent overexposure and can also be used for slow shutter photography in still images.
The "Variable NDX II" features a newly developed polarizing film that enhances color neutrality. This allows for use at higher densities up to ND450 (when focal length is 50mm or more).
Additionally, user-friendliness has been improved by adding a detachable operation lever that can be mounted on the filter frame. The lever can be attached in two different positions. The rotation range of the filter frame is limited to 90°, so no excessive turning is required.
Furthermore, by maintaining the same filter diameter, you can continue to use your existing lens cap even after attaching this filter.
■ Product Features
- An essential filter for digital video shooting
In video recording, the appropriate shutter speed depends on the frame rate (fps). Usually, it should be up to twice the frame rate. If the shutter speed is too fast, the motion may appear choppy and unnatural. Using an ND filter to set the shutter speed to an appropriate value allows for smooth, natural footage. It is especially useful when shooting with a bright aperture to achieve background blur.
With the "Variable NDX II," you can freely adjust the density even in changing lighting conditions, maintaining the correct shutter speed.
- Prevents overexposure when shooting with wide-open apertures and supports slow shutter shooting
When shooting in bright sunlight with a bright lens like F1.4, even at the maximum shutter speed of 1/8000 sec, overexposure may occur. Using the "Variable NDX II" to reduce light allows you to prevent overexposure while keeping the aperture wide open. Without a filter, you would need to stop down the aperture, which can affect the desired effect and cause image quality degradation due to diffraction. It also enables slow shutter effects while maintaining the lens's resolution, allowing for creative expressions of flowing water, moving people, or vehicles.
- Achieves reduction without color cast
The variable ND filter uses a structure similar to stacking two PL filters, changing the density by rotating the polarizing film. Conventional polarizing films can cause color cast, but the "Variable NDX II" uses a newly developed polarizing film that ensures neutral color reproduction. It is truly the ultimate variable ND filter.
*Note: When the density is close to maximum, there may be X-shaped artifacts in the image. This phenomenon is more likely with shorter focal lengths and varies with the maximum usable density.
Approximate usable density ranges (all in 35mm format):
- 24mm focal length → ND2.5 to ND40
- 35mm focal length → ND2.5 to ND80
- 50mm or more → ND2.5 to ND450

【Enhanced color neutrality with new polarizing film】Adopts a newly developed polarizing film that improves color neutrality, enabling natural color shooting.
【Wide range of light reduction with a single filter】Adjustable from ND2.5 to ND450 (at 50mm focal length) in a smooth, continuous manner.
【Compatible with your existing lens cap】Unlike typical variable ND filters, which often require larger filter sizes, this product maintains the same filter diameter as other lens filters, allowing you to use your existing lens cap.
【Includes a detachable operation lever with two mounting positions】Comes with an operation lever for adjusting density, which can be attached in two different positions for convenience during video shooting.
■ Usable density range (all in 35mm format): 24mm focal length → up to ND40 / 35mm focal length → up to ND80 / 50mm or more → up to ND450. *Exceeding these densities may cause uneven density artifacts.
